BMW 30 csl 2285467

Title:

  • NZ registration: NF5699

  • UK Registration: NTV 53M. In 2017, the owner retains the original V5 document for the car and its certificate of permanent export (de-reg papers).

Mileage: -

Model 3452

Outside color (paint code): Fjord Blue metallic (037)

Matching numbers: 2017: yes

History:

Condition 2017: the shell is reasonably sound - not perfect but pretty bloody good. The alloy panels are mint. The engine is correct and the gearbox has been found. The front Scheel seats are missing. Rest is in pieces. On the upside the petri wheel is there (although in bad shape). There are 2 brand new pairs of rear light clusters (one UK, one US). The dash and wood dont look too bad (although the dash has had some woodworm in it!) There are multiples of many things from another CS he broke a while back. The deal also comes with a 3.0 CSA donor with more holes than metal but the brightwork and glass are very good. There will be other bit. The chrome exhaust headers are obviously wrong - that is the only bit of exhaust I would be getting! Much of the rubber looks pretty good but in general all parts are in the kind of condition you might expect from a car that was stripped because it needed restoring and then stored (often not very well) for many years.

the shell and alloy panels are in really very good condition all things considered. The motor is the motor, it is there, largely complete and the correct CSL number

History 2017 (new owner speaking)

The CSL  was exported from the UK in 1987 -

Its UK plate was NTV 53M. I have the original logbook with some service stamps till the early 80’s

The dereg papers from the UK show that the last registered owner (Graham McGregor - Norwich UK) was also the man that the person I bought the car off - bought the car off in 1999. So Graham Mcgregor must have moved to New Zealand around that time and brought his CSL with him. As far as I know he still lives in NZ.

In the UK it had one named previous recorded owner (on the V5) - a Micheal John Steley of Kings Lynn. It was shipped to NZ and was registered on 13-4-87 with the registration plate NF5699 - which means that it was roadworthy when it entered NZ. It has since dropped off the registration system.

I purchased it from a local man who purchased it from Graham McGregor in 1999. In the sale an purchase agreement between them Graham states that the car is ‘partially restored’ and notes that he has removed his garage end wall to make removal off the car easier?! I have no way of knowing how long it was in his garage!

The previous owner already owned another CSL which he sold when he bought this car. He had it stripped and acid dipped. Some repairs were undertaken but the project never really got going and a change of circumstances led to the shell being dry stored on its restoration dolly since the mid 2000’s. The rest of the components (matching engine etc) were stored at the owners house but about 10 years ago he had to move in a hurry (a landslide caused the government to compulsory purchase his house) - being a hoarder he had dozens of cars and ‘stuff’ - some of which got lost/damaged in the move. I am fairly confident I have the vast bulk of 2285467, including most of the CSL specific parts (headlining, petri, rear scheels, alloy panels, diff, wheels, etc etc) but we have not as yet found the front scheel seats. Still looking but if the do not turn up I will have to find replacements……

The shell is in pretty good order - shows some minor historical repair and has some issues to address now - but it is not anywhere near the terrible condition I have seen some of these cars end up! It has the correct chassis # stamp and I have the correct vin plate for it

The engine is unknown - it is the correct number engine and looks largely complete but will require a complete rebuild. Same for the gearbox.

The trim and woodwork is not actually all that bad but will require full refurbishment

I intend to entrust the car to a local well respected restorer with some experience of BMW’s. www.thesurgery.co.nz

The have estimated it will take around 2 years to complete. I intend to have it put back to as close to absolutely original and new as we can manage.

As part of the purchase I also got a very rotten 73 CSA which may yield a few minor donor parts if needed (although we pretty much have everything that cannot be still be bought new)
